Irene Emma Lund, age 79, of Tacoma, Washington died Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at her home after a long struggle with mesothelioma.
Irene was born on February 2, 1935 in Eschenbach-Opf., Germany to George and Anna Hass. She began her marriage to Richard Allen Lund in Erding, Germany on November 15, 1958.
Irene was a graduate of the University of Munich, Grunewald Sport Academe (BS) and the University of Hawaii with a master in public health. She worked for the city of San Antonio, Texas and the states of Hawaii and Washington in various public health and nursing care supervisory positions. She was an avid chef and gardener, and a lover of the outdoors and was most at home hiking and skiing amongst the beauties of Washington State.
Irene is survived by her husband Col. Richard A. Lund of Grand Marais and Tacoma, Washington; her son Rolf George Lund of San Jose, California and daughters Ellen Lund Niehus of Bastrop, Texas, and Cathrine Lund Martin of Seattle, Washington as well as eight grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Helmut Hass of Rosenheim, Germany
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Roland Hass of Munich, Germany.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12 at the Wayside United Church of Christ, 2000 SW Dash Point Road, Federal Way, Washington 98023. The family asks that donations and remembrances of Irene be sent to Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation at www.curemeso.org.
