Invest now, and the returns will be positive

Contentious times call us to reaffirm our values.

The Public Health and Human Services Advisory Committee finds itself talking a lot these days about what makes for a healthy community. We are citizens and providers that serve as a sounding board for our Cook County Public Health and Human Services Department.

The topic of mental health has been especially timely. Availability of therapists and counselors, school-based services, support for people in difficult times, and needs of our elderly citizens are just some of the issues we focus on.

The discussion invariably turns to the resources it takes to serve the many needs of people who are here. At some point along life’s way, that’s all When we are asked to contribute, as volunteers or taxpayers, the values that hold us together, compassion, dignity, inclusion of all, may well be the best place from which to respond. If we’re willing to invest wisely now, the returns will produce an ongoing difference in the health and wellbeing of our community.
