International tennis tournament held in Grand Marais

A record 34 players participated in the North Shore Social Doubles event held Sunday, August 20 at the Cook County Community Tennis Courts in Grand Marais.

The field included six players from Silver Bay, one from Minneapolis and five from Canada. Sean Wiebe, in fact, came from Prince Edward Island to take part.

Eight teams competed for the coveted honor of being champions and having bragging rights for the next year.

“The way matches were set we played against people of comparable ability,” said Lynn Swanson. “There were beginners and people that were very talented. It was the best field that I remember for this tournament,” added Swanson.

The winning team was Jim Ringquist, Linda Haller, Sean Wiebe, and Lynn Swanson (with an assist from Bruce Leng). After the tennis, players and guests adjourned to the Cook County Community Center for a delicious potluck dinner hosted by the Cook County Tennis Association.
