On Saturday, March 11, the Cook County Northerns U.S. Masters workout group and the YMCA Adult Swim Club hosted an event at the Cook County Y.

There were 40 swimmers in attendance; 27 local Cook County residents, 11 swimmers from the Thunder Bay Rays Masters Club, and two from the Nort’landers Masters club. The purpose of the meet was to have a fun, inclusive swim event for our local community and beyond, and to raise funds for the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation Adult Learn-to- Swim program.

Swimmers and spectators were treated to some strong performances in the pool. A special 50-yard exhibition swim by three of the adults who participated in the first-ever Adult Learn-to- Swim class at the Y brought the crowd to their feet with their effort. The main event of the morning, a 200-yard freestyle relay pitting teams from WTIP, the YMCA, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Cook County employees closed out the meet. The county employees walked off with the win, and hold bragging rights, for now!

Residents volunteered in various capacities to keep the meet running smoothly, and a group of college students from Iowa serving on their spring break with the Coldwater Foundation filled many key spots. Almost $400 was raised for the ALTS program as swimmers contributed 100 percent of their entry fee for this purpose. The Y will be offering Adult Learn-to-Swim lessons again in April; check with staff for more information.

A big thank you to the Cook County YMCA and staff for hosting this event, and special thanks to Emily Marshall for serving as the starter and the start/turn judge. Fika Coffee, Voyageur Brewing, Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply and Cedar Coffee/Spokengear joined in the fun by offering perks for all the registered swimmers. A good time was had by all!

There is nothing easy about doing the butterfly stroke even though Monica Anderson makes it look easy. Anderson was competing in the 100-yard IM event held at the YMCA last Saturday.

Pushing hard, the swimmers gave it their all in the 50 yard freestyle event. All told, the swimming meet garnered almost $400 for the Adult Learn-to-Swim program. And while the meet was low key, there were several strong performances put in by some fine swimmers who attended the three-hour meet.
