The United Nations designated September 21 as the International Day of Peace, and each year people gather and devote the day to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and people.
This year’s theme for the International Day of Peace “honors the spirit of together, a global initiative that promotes respect, safety and dignity for everyone forced to flee their homes in search of a better life.” The emphasis is the plight of refugees and immigrants around the globe.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Huterres said, “Together, let us stand up against bigotry and for human rights. Together, let us build bridges. Together, let us transform fear into hope.”
Locally there will be a gathering of people supporting the peace movement at 7 p.m. on September 21 at the Grand Marais City Recreation Park, at the pavilion near the dog pound.
