Michael Hendrickson, 41, Grand Portage was seriously injured on Saturday, February 26, 2011 in a snowmobile accident about 300 yards from the parking lot at Nor’wester Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. Apparently the 1995 Arctic Cat EXT snowmobile left the trail and struck a tree. Hendrickson suffered a lacerated liver, torn aorta, and eight broken ribs on his right side. Cook County Law Enforcement was informed on March 10 that Hendrickson had succumbed to his injuries.
It is believed that Hendrickson was driving the snowmobile. Neither he nor his passenger, Jacquelyn Marie Jackson, 50, were wearing helmets. It is believed that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
The accident was discovered by other snowmobilers passing by and called in by Vince Ekroot at Windigo Lodge. Both parties were transported to the Cook County North Shore Hospital by ambulance and then by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.
Jackson sustained a compound fracture of a right femur. She was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital and is expected to be released to a care facility on March 10.
