Injured hiker rescued on Carlton Peak trail

Cook County Law Enforcement was called at 11:09 a.m. on Sunday, September 28, reporting a hiker on the Carlton Peak hiking trail with a severe leg injury. Tofte First Responders, Cook County Ambulance and Cook County Search and Rescue were paged and worked together to get the patient out of the woods.

The hiker, a 50-year-old woman was about 1.3 miles in on the trail from the Superior Hiking Trail trailhead on the Sawbill Trail in Tofte, near the top of Carlton Peak.

According to the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office dispatch log, the first emergency responder to reach the woman radioed back that although the woman’s ankle was bruised and swollen, “no bone was sticking out as previously reported by another hiker.”

Responders had the injured woman out to the trailhead by 1:46 p.m. She was transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital. No information on her condition has been released.
