In the September 27th article Chris Goettl to run as write-in school board candidate, it is noted that the school board is proposing to rename the Columbus Day holiday “Indigenous People Day.”
Since “indigenous” is defined as “existing, growing, or produced naturally in a region or country; belonging (to) as a native,” I can but wonder why such a divisive move would be made.
Are residents not born in Cook County somehow lesser forms of citizen? We are told that this proposal would be following Duluth’s “lead” on the matter. Is there a public demand for such a change? Is there some burning need to destroy a generations-old traditional holiday when another day could have been so-designated?
If this pattern continues we could see the day when schools ban the traditional observances of Christmas and Easter.
Oh, never mind…
