The two week filing period for the school and hospital boards and the Grand Marais city council is underway and the incumbents for seven offices on the November ballot have started to state their filing intentions. There will be at least one open seat on each of the three boards. The filing period ends Tuesday, August 11. The incumbents were interviewed by phone this week.
North Shore Health
There will be at least one new member on the North Shore Health board. District 2 member Justin Mueller said he would not be running for a third term. In district 4, Kay Olson said she is still considering whether to run, with her leaning towards filing. She said there is still a lot to do at the hospital. Olson was first elected in 2008 and re-elected twice.
District 2 is the Grand Marais East and Croftville precincts. District 4 includes the Gunflint Trail and Maple Hill precincts.
Cook County School District 166
At least one seat on the school board will be open. Sissy Lunde says she will not be running again in District 4, after serving eight years on the school board. Carrie Jansen, completing her first term in the District 2 seat said she is still weighing her decision.
The districts are the same for the school, hospital and county board contests.
Grand Marais City Council
Jay Arrowsmith Decoux will be running for another term as city mayor. He has been elected to the position in 2014, 2016 and 2018. Long time council member Tim Kennedy announced earlier that he would not be seeking another term on the council. Craig Schulte, appointed to fill a short term vacancy in 2018, says he is running for a full term.
The city council members are elected at large, for four year terms, with half the council up each election. The mayor serves a two year term.
Candidates for the hospital and school board seats must live in the district they are running to represent and only residents in those districts vote for those seats. There are primary elections for the seats in this round of filings.
