On May 27th, a letter to the editor from Theresa Donovan of Hovland was published. As someone who lives in Hovland, I feel another view is needed.
I have lived in Cook County all my life. The Grand Marais Public Library has always been a wonderful resource. I have used the quiet room, the conference room, and study spaces to further my education. Most of all, I have attended numerous programs hosted by the library. These have spanned many histories and cultures. The library has only ever listened to the community and supported various groups of people. Drag story hour is just one of these programs.
Drag comes in many forms and is performed in varying situations. Just because someone is wearing a dress does not give anyone the right to sexualize that person. I wear dresses and have never done so with hopes of being inappropriate.
I would like to ask those who have signed Donovan’s petition: Would you take your children to a theater to see a play? How are those exaggerated costumes and parodies any different from drag?
Drag story hour is doing nothing more than creating a fun learning environment for families. It is showing children that diversity is not a threat. I am thankful for a library that encourages children in their education. I know I have benefited from their support.
Thank you,
Martine Redshaw, Hovland
