POWER P eop le who di sp ose of thei r used mot or oil at the Cook County Recycling Center may notice a new containment system. County Planning & Zoning Director Tim Nelson wrote in an October 19, 2009 memo to the county board, “We have had to remedy the situation with the waste oil tank at the recycling center where people who had a hard time climbing the steps with the waste oil spilt the oil along the tank onto the ground.” Spills sometimes landed on the parking lot, Nelson said.
Nelson said Jason Hall of Hall Masonry constructed “a watertight concrete containment area slightly buried into the ground so that people will not have to utilize any stairs to dispose of the waste oil, and if any oil is spilt on or around the tank, that oil will fall into the containment basin.”
On Tuesday, October 27, the county board voted unanimously to authorize payment of $4,925 for the project. Abstaining was Commissioner Jan Hall, whose son did the work.
