When I look at pictures of this year’s Cook County High School graduating class, I think what a fine looking group of young people—beautiful and handsome I’m sure in many ways, especially if you know them.
But then I count them and think to myself this is the group of school leaders who have lead this school to all those accomplishments we’ve read and heard about this school year? And I think further, how did this small number of young people accomplish so much and do it so well?
This school, with the leadership of this class of 2012, excelled in so many efforts. Let me give you a few examples: the knowledge bowl, the geography bee, the one act play contest, other drama and speech contests, the robotbuilding, music—choral and instrumental—contests, and of course sports, from fall through spring every team brought excellence in effort, sportsmanship and often champions and championships.
I’m sure I’ve missed some things of note and maybe overstated some others, but think about what these kids— this small number of kids—have accomplished. And, they also mostly got their homework in on time and passed all their courses and graduated with their plans and eyes on their future.
Cook County has much to be proud of in the efforts and results these 2012 graduates can claim. It should also give all who know of them great confidence in the future that these young people will claim for their own.
