Jay Schulberg’s letter of Sept 5 included a selection of humanistic characteristics from which to imagine a god one could respect. The key word is “imagination” as that is the origin of gods.
Traditional religions rely on the imagination of sages past, as if primitive and thousand year old imaginations are to be revered, and are more valid than those of the 21st century. Belief is essential for the continuance of the dogma, ignoring the centuries of knowledge gained through critical thinking and scientific methods.
To question or doubt the ancient writings becomes taboo and is called “foolish.”
