There are dozens of interesting and entertaining events running up to and following the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, in Duluth and all along the North Shore. There is the Beargrease Gala Dinner at Canal Park; the Cutest Puppy Contest at Fitgers; the Mid-Distance Awards Banquet at Surfside in Tofte; Winter Camp along the Sawbill Trail in Tofte; and the on-going festivities at Trail Center on the Gunflint Trail. One event, added to the Beargrease a few years ago continues well into February. Images from the John Beargrease Sled Dog Race will be on exhibit at the Great Lakes Aquarium until February 21, 2100. Opening night is Saturday, January 29 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Along with the amazing photography by Marc Bowen, Chris Gibbs, Jessica Jasek, Kyle Krohm, Kit Larson and the winners of the 2010 Beargrease photo contest will be the fabulous work of Gary Meinz of Lutsen. Meinz has been a regular at Beargrease checkpoints for many years and has a masterful way of capturing the excitement.
This is a must-see show for any sled dog racing fan. Jack LaVoy, executive director of the aquarium, said the show has gotten better every year. “It has spilled out of our Art Gallery and up the stairs. It is just beautiful,” said LaVoy.
The Aquarium is at 353 Harbor Drive, Duluth. Call (218) 740-3474 for information.
