The much-anticipated Illumination: Igniting Imagination exhibit opened at the Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais on Friday, March 13, bringing artists and art lovers from near and far to see how the theme of illumination is interpreted in a variety of media.
The show, in its 5th year, is sponsored by the Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church in collaboration with the Johnson Heritage Post, the Grand Marais Art Colony and community artists. It features works in clay, glass, paint, paper, found objects, wood, tin, tile and more, all lovingly created by friends and neighbors. All giving a glimpse into the artists’ souls; giving a glimpse of what illuminates them.
Reverend Mary Ellen Ashcroft, vicar of Spirit of the Wilderness, explains that the show is purposefully non-judged and non-juried. In a recent church newsletter, Ashcroft wrote, “We value creativity over perfection, involvement over passivity.”
In addition to a lovely wine and cheese reception, attendees were welcomed to a presentation by Susan Sink, author of The Art of the Saint John’s Bible.
All are encouraged to stop by to see the exhibit, which Reverend Ashcroft, vicar of Spirit of the Wilderness, describes as “a space for connection, expression and risk.” The exhibit runs through March 29.
