Ian Sylvester of Grand Marais received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history during graduation ceremonies May 14 at the University of Minnesota Duluth’s undergraduate commencement at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
Ian is the son of Jeff and Annette Sylvester of Grand Marais, and is a 2007 graduate of Cook County High School.
University of Minnesota Duluth Chancellor Dr. Lendley C. Black presided over the ceremonies, overseeing the university’s first undergraduate commencement to be held in the DECC.
This spring, UMD conferred nearly 1,950 undergraduate degrees, 225 graduate degrees, and 14 doctoral degrees. Over 100 faculty members and 1,160 students marched in the event; nearly 5,600 parents and guests attended the ceremony.
The commencement speaker was UMD alumna Dr. Kathleen R. Annette, the first woman in the Minnesota Chippewa Nation to become a physician.
