Ian Holmen of Grand Marais received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology, magna cum laude, from Carleton College during its 138th commencement exercises June 9, 2012.
Holmen is the son of James Holmen and Rita Plourde of Grand Marais.
Two senior students spoke at the ceremony. Rebekah Frumkin, a philosophy major from Libertyville, Illinois, presented a speech entitled What We Talk About When We Talk About Carleton, and Michael Groeneman, a computer science major from Bethesda, Md., delivered a speech entitled, Thirteen Hundred Days.
Carleton also presented an honorary degree during the commencement ceremony to scientist George H. Davis, The Regents Professor (Emeritus) of Structural Geology at the University of Arizona, and the current chair of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for Geosciences Directorate. Davis was awarded the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Davis briefly addressed the graduating class, as did Carleton College’s eleventh president, Steven Poskanzer.
Carleton is a private, co-educational college located 40 miles south of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
