I know I’m going

I know I’m going—going where, you say? To the summer season of plays at the Grand Marais Playhouse! The little ditty “I know I’m going” is on the buttons we are giving away as a way to promote our 40th season. Would you like a button? Just ask a Playhouse board member or stop by the Playhouse to pick one up. As an added advantage, if we see you wearing your button, we might just give you a voucher to $1 off a ticket to a play!

Treasure Island
finished its spring debut on Sunday. We were pleased with attendance and heard many positive comments about the play.

If you missed it, the play will be performed again in late June and early July. Treasure
Island
kicked off its opening night with a fundraiser put on by Becky Thompson of Sweetz etc. With donations from Dockside Fish Market, Sawtooth Chiropractic, and Gunflint Mercantile, Becky put on an unbelievable spread for all to enjoy—fabulous sweets, stew, pulled chicken, fresh fruit and salads and more. It was a feast and many, many people showed up and helped make this event very successful! We raised over $1,000! Thank you to everyone who participated, and a special thank-you to Becky and her family for their hours of preparation!

Everyone loved the adventurous Playhouse production of Treasure Island! The crew has sailed off into the sunset, but they will be back at the end of June. If you missed the action, you’ll get a second chance! Here, Jim Hawkins (Sean MacDonell) wrestles free from Israel Hands (Sarah Warren).

The summer Playhouse internship program will begin in the early summer. Every year the Playhouse hires interns for help with the summer season. Interns are a stage manager for one show and help in a variety of ways—lights, sound, blocking, assisting actors, building sets and so on. These positions are paid and provide valuable experience to the intern.

We are in need of some funding for these positions. Every year the county gives $4,000, and the City of Grand Marais typically has given $1,500. Although this might seem like a lot of funding, and it certainly helps, we are asking for individual donations this year. We have three interns this summer—this is the only support staff we have. Any help we could receive with funding would be appreciated. Contact Sue at the Playhouse if you would be willing to assist with this.

Cole Porter’s You Never
Know
will be the summer musical this year with auditions being held on May 11. With Sue Hennessy’s hard work, we were able to obtain a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, which will be used to hire a choreographer and music director.

Doug Livesay, a familiar name to many in our community, will be back to work on the sound and will also be teaching a live sound-mixing class while he is here.

Pam Knorek from the North Carolina School of the Arts has opened up her school’s wardrobe to us, which means we will have authentic and fabulous costumes for this production. We have one need at the present time—musicians. We would like to have a pit orchestra so if you are a musician, we are looking for your help. Fun is guaranteed! If you are interested, please call the Playhouse.

Following the musical production will be Play On,
which is a “spoof ” of theater. June 8 is set aside for auditions. This play promises to be filled with laughter.

Thanks to everyone who has so graciously helped us this 40th season. Thesummer season will provide some great entertainment for us, our friends, families and tourists. I know I’m going!
