Carlie Sorosiak has written another beautiful children’s book for readers ages 8-12. This heartwarming story is told from the perspective of Cosmo, a 13-year-old golden retriever caught in the middle of trouble brewing in his family.
As Halloween nears, little Emmeline is determined to dress Cosmo in a turtle outfit, something Cosmo dreads. Then, there is his boy, Max. Max, age 10, is sad because his parents are fighting. Family dance night has been canceled. There is talk of divorce. What can Cosmo do to help? Will he and Max become separated?
Uncle Reggie returns from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and begins to train Max and Cosmo for dance contests held in exclusive clubs for dogs. Yes, there are dance clubs for dogs and people!
As a canine specialist, Uncle Reggie knows the tricks of the trade on how to train Cosmo and Max. When Cosmo and Max falter in a competition, Uncle Reggie reminds Max, “Don’t focus on anyone else but you. The best that you can do is more than enough.”
This tail-wagging story is told over a year, from one Halloween to the next. Over that period, Max and Cosmo realize dance can’t save Max’s parents’ marriage, but no matter what happens, love will remain.
With Cosmo as the narrator, Carlie handles the subject of biracial divorce with great sensitivity. As Carlie said, “I have always wanted to write a book from a dog’s perspective because dogs have always been my closest friends.”
I, Cosmo, was chosen by Amazon as a Book of the Month in December, 2019.
Carlie is the granddaughter of Pat Zankman, Grand Marais, and the great-granddaughter of Ed and Ruby Lind.
“I love visiting Grand Marais, especially your adorable independent bookstore, Drury Lane,” she said in a 2017 interview to the Cook County News- Herald. Grand Marais was also the partial inspiration for her second novel Wild Blue Yonder, published by Harper Collins in 2018.
