Hungry Jack hikers found safe in severe rain storm

Most of Cook County was hunkered down at home on Monday, July 11 as a heavy rainstorm roared through the county. However, a page went out at 8:48 p.m., calling members of Cook County Search and Rescue out to a search. Hikers Jared and Renae Sundby of Devils Lake, North Dakota were lost, believed to be on the Caribou Rock trail, off of the Hungry Jack Road.

Because of the storm and impeding darkness, members of the Gunflint Trail Fire Department were called to assist Search and Rescue. Volunteers staged at the Caribou Rock trailhead and at the Duncan Lake portage. The fire department brought a fire truck to provide lighting.

An emergency responder was able to contact the lost couple by cell phone and they described where they were, saying they were sitting on a big rock overlooking a lake. A responder believed they were on the trail overlooking Duncan Lake. They were located there unharmed at 10:30 p.m.

The Sundbys and all responders were out of the woods by 11:15.
