When was the last time you walked into the kitchen, opened the refrigerator door and just stood there somewhat dazed looking for “something”? You are hungry, but for what?
Hmmmm, Greek Yogurt? Nah.
Cold bacon, pineapple and black olive pizza? Nah, ah.
Left over bean soup? Don’t think so.
Maybe peanut butter, jelly and cheese on Davison bread?
You close the door… the refrigerator is full and your stomach is empty, but nothing seems quite what you want.
You walk away only to return moments later and follow the same routine again, hoping that something in that magical white box will call out “take me, take me!”
I really want something and I just don’t know what it is. Many of us spend our lives the same way. We long for something to satisfy us and don’t know what it is. We try different things but like the peanut butter, jelly and cheese, it just isn’t quite right…not enough to really satisfy. We keep on longing and we keep on seeking.
It seems as if we don’t know what we want and we don’t get it. Maybe, just maybe, we are looking in the wrong place.
The Psalmist understands us. He cries out, “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God”(Psalm 42:1).
Perhaps we need to follow the Psalmist’s example. Maybe we need to close the refrigerator door and look within ourselves for a relationship with God…maybe that is what we have been looking for all along.
Just pondering.
