The North Shore Federal Credit Union (NSFCU) has seen a remarkable response to its “Hunger Hero” program. NSFCU President Mark Summers reports that because of members, the credit union has donated over $15,000 this year to hunger prevention programs. One of the most recent donations was to Cook County’s Ruby’s Pantry.
Summers said the latest gift from the Hunger Hero program is $500 to Ruby’s Pantry to be used for “scholarships” for Ruby’s Pantry, through certificates for students in the Snacks and Packs program.
The Snacks and Packs program is administrated by Cook County Extension Service Director Diane Booth. The program discreetly provides school children who may not always get enough healthy food over the weekends an assortment of groceries in backpacks for them to carry home. There are currently 44 recipients in the Snacks and Packs program.
Because of the Hunger Hero donation, when students receive their Snacks and Packs backpack, certificates for Ruby’s Pantry will be included so that family will be able to take part in Ruby’s Pantry food distributions.
If you would like to learn more about supporting the BackPack Program, contact Diane Booth at (218) 387-3015 or email diane.booth@co.cook. mn.us.
Ruby’s Pantry is open to all. Food distributions are every second Tuesday of the month from 5-6:30 p.m. at Cook County Schools/ISD 166.
