Hsitorical Reflections

Wolves have been an on-again, off-again problem in Cook County over the decades. In February 1965, James Greco found this dead deer on the ice near his Poplar Lake home. The animal had its legs eaten off, evidently by wolves. Columnist Justine Kerfoot wrote in the same issue (Feb. 18, 1965), “The wolf population around Poplar Lake has greatly increased this winter due to the many deer in the area. Wolves were seen crossing the lake and heading into the woods around Carl Brandt’s cabins. He trapped one and they have stayed away for a while…but they will undoubtedly be back.”
