Hovland Art Fair draws nice crowd

Featuring a wide variety of local artists and crafts people, the two-day Hovland Art Fair drew sizeable crowds throughout the weekend. Music by Shannon Crossbear, Adam Kirsch, The Fish Heads, Bump Blomberg and Joe Paulik filled the air and kept the mood upbeat as folks shopped the various tents on the fairgrounds or inside of the Hovland Town Hall.

Some of the artists who displayed their wares were Becky Heller. Heller makes animals by needle felting over a wire skeleton; Lou Pignolet was back again with his terrific bowls fashioned from burls; Kim Knutson brought salves, balms and lotions, Linda Bauer brought some hand knits and spun yarn and Nuno felted scarves. Jeff Morgan displayed mosaic and fused glass pieces; Katy Attleson’s jewelry made from recycled materials (copper, beads, bone, rock, etc.) was beautiful and unique. Colorful blankets and scarf/sashes by Mary Macdonald were eye-catching and well-made as were the natural baskets and ornaments by long-time favorite Julie Kean. Haley Brockovich’s imitative small pieces were children’s favorites while Ann Ward’s Northwood themed pottery was stunning.

Gina Adams paints birds using acrylic paint and her work is fantastic. Terry Lewis’ shimmering garden art wind chimes are festive and fun. James Vannett was busy carving while his wife showed off his amazing fish to passerbys. Jayne Richards’ paintings are poetry on canvas. Anishinaabe artist Amber Swader was back again with her terrific bead art and award-winning beadwork and felting artist Jo Wood had a lot of beautiful and intricate works on display.

There were many other artis: Dee Closson brought her exquisite leather goods while James Egan displayed his flies while tying flies. Todd Hawkins jewelry was first rate as was quilt and textile artist Kate Kristine’s colorful blankets and wares. Rachel Ray Klessers watercolor prints and cards were all about the Northland and Gail Anderson’s Lake Superior stone lamps as always were stunning and unique. There were more artists, more to look at, and no one should have been bored.

And oh yes, Ben Rex was back with his delicious baked goods. Proceeds from his two days of strong sales went into his college fund so no one should have guilty overindulging in his sweet treats.
