Seven months into her new job and Vera Schumann has found her position as director of finance for the Cook County North Shore Hospital & Care Center to be interesting and challenging.
Of course health care with its ever-changing rules and regulations is always going to be challenging, no matter how much experience one has in the field.
Schumann hit the ground running when she accepted the job. She had to. There was the normal workload and then there was the additional work of planning for the proposed $20 million rehabilitation and building project for the hospital and care center.
Schumann has spent the last 14 years working in health care positions similar to the one she now holds, she said. She discovered Cook County after her fiancé was transferred here to work at the Grand Portage border as a Customs and Border Protection employee.
Born in Florida, Schumann’s family moved to the Twin Cities when she was young and she was raised in the metro area. Before moving to Cook County, Schumann lived in New Hampshire, Pine City, Hastings and International Falls.
“This is hopefully my last move. I really like Cook County, it’s absolutely beautiful, although the winters could be shorter,” she said.

“Andria recently swam$679.41five miles across Lake Minnetonka. Her goal is to swim the English Channel. She’ll probably do it, because she is so goal oriented,” Schumann said.
During her free time Schumann likes to knit, sew, bake and cook. She ForalsoYourlovesMedications?to golf and wants to make more time for hiking and cross-country skiing.
As far as her work at the hospital/ care center, she said there is never a dull moment. “There is always something newCelecoxibto learn.” She said she also greatly enjoys$64.00working with the staff and meeting folks in the community.
“The next time I move I plan on it being six feet straight down,” Schumann said with a laugh.
