Hope for Haiti

The devastating earthquake in Haiti touched the third -and fourth-year Spanish students at Cook County High School. The students recently organized a fundraiser for the people of Haiti. High school, middle school and elementary students rallied to raise over $3,000. The students appreciate contributions they received from classmates, family, friends, ISD 166 staff and the Cook County community. Funds will support the efforts of the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders. Above: Spanish 3 and 4 students are (L-R) Kristina Andelova, Autumn Clearwater-Day, Reid Shepard, Jaclyn Biesemeyer, Darren Waha, Sarah O’Phelan, Karlee Axtell, Daniel Ditmanson, Katrina Axtell, Max Simonowicz and Will Brandenburg. (Not pictured: Ailee Larson, Ryan Martinson, Will Petty and Molly Rider). Left: Ruth Anne Olson, a former Twin Cities’ teacher and a part-time Hovland resident, recently met with the Spanish students. Olson congratulated the students on their efforts to raise $3,000 for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Olson, who has made several trips to rural regions of Haiti, passionately described the spirit of the Haitian people and the economic reality of Haiti both before and after the earthquake. Olson has published a set of posters entitled Images of Haiti. These posters are available in English and Creole and can be displayed in such places as schools, churches, libraries and public meeting areas to bring about awareness of the Haitian people. Posters can be ordered at www.SyracuseCulturalWorkers.com. Olson has also published a book, Images Of Haiti: Stories Of Strength, which is available on the same web site.
