Honors for Vikings Deschampe and Laky

Ashley Deschampe’s years of hard work and dedication to becoming the best basketball player she could become have been rewarded with her selection by coaches as the 2012 Polar League player of the Year.

Deschampe led the conference in scoring with a 23.1- point average. She also led the conference in free throw percentage with 78.5 percent and was first in 3-point shooting percentage with 38.9 percent of her long-range shots finding the bottom of the basket. Ashley was also third in the conference with 3.2 assists per game and fifth in field goal percentage with 43.3 percent of her shots scoring.

Bekah Laky received an honorable mention.

Head Coach T.J. Super said, “I was extremely happy, but not surprised, with the results of the All-Conference selections. Bekah is an often-underappreciated player but the right people could see her talents and honor her. When you look at the Polar League, there are 11 teams in the conference, 3AA schools and state power Barnum. Besides those, there are 3-4 good programs that make it difficult to crack the 1st or 2nd team for all-conference selections. Bekah being named honorable mention as a unanimous selection is a very big honor.

“I figured coming into the year, that Ashley could be a contender for league MVP. As the season progressed, I really knew that she would, or at least should, get the award, as she continued to dominate games and prove to be the most valuable player in the conference. She becomes the first Cook County girl (as far as I know) to get the MVP award and I think she’s proven her worth and value in our first two playoff games, as if there was any doubt!”
