At the April 19, 2010 National Honor Society inductions, speaker Arleigh Jorgenson commended 26 students for their excellence. He also cautioned them with Plato’s words: “The greatest wisdom is to know that you know not.”
Jorgenson told the students, “You are leaders,” but he added this challenge: “How do we go about becoming a good thinker?”
The National Honor Society recognizes those who demonstrate scholarships, leadership, service and character. A national organization since 1921, NHS has been in operation at Cook County High School since 1961.
This year 16 new inductees formed one of the largest groups of newcomers including seniors Karlee Axtell and Alec Muhich; juniors Katrina Axtell, Will Brandenburg, Karl Ingebrigtsen, Will Petty, Kristina Rude, Sebastian Schnobrich; and sophomores David Bergstrom, Michaela Buchheit, Ashley Deschampe, Sophie Holz, Cecelia Olsen, Ashley Ross, Anika Stone and Molly Zafft.
Continuing members include seniors Drew Holmen (president), Carly Puch (vce-President), Jacob Rude (secretary), Skyler Johnson (treasurer), Jonathan Baumann, Kipp Sande, and Martha Wilkes (currently in Chile); juniors Ailee Larson, Molly Rider, Sarah O’Phelan, and Amber Todd.
As guest speaker, Jorgenson inspired adults and students alike to seek wisdom “It is the foundation of the truth that we cannot know all of it. But thirst for it nonetheless,” Jorgenson said. “Enjoy the process of discovery and debate and argument. Do not settle.”
Advisor Ivy Church presented the ten National Honor Society seniors with the NHS stoles they will wear at graduation.
