Many people in Minnesota do not file for the property tax refund when they would qualify to receive it. If your property is classified as Homestead you can qualify. If your income is $108,660 or less you may qualify. There are two programs to get refunds. One gives you a refund if your taxes increase from the previous year by 12 percent or more. The other program is just based on income. Senior Citizens get an extra discount.
According to 2016 tables if your income was $20,000 and your property tax was $500 you could receive a $170 refund, or if your tax was $1,800 you could receive a $1,070 refund. If your income was $40,000 and your property tax was $800 you could receive a $667 refund. To learn more about this program go to “Form M1PR” on the Internet.
These programs mean that the state of Minnesota is helping to pay Cook County property taxes and our actual tax including the refund is much lower than it looks like.
