Last year, the members of the Chateau LeVeaux Home Owners Association were inspired by the WTIP community radio series Living on the Edge
to make a donation to the Cook County Health and Human Services Emergency Fund. The series, produced by Barbara Jean Johnson of WTIP, focused on the difficulties of earning a living on the North Shore. The individual homeowners “passed the hat” and contributed over $400 to the fund that helps families who may need a little extra help in some way. The association members decided to do so again this year, increasing the donation to $1,000, thanks in part to a challenge donation of $500 was given by Hollenbeck and Nelson Masonry of the Twin Cities.

Health & Human Services Director Sue Futterer said the donation is greatly appreciated. She said the emergency fund is used to help people with needs not covered in some other manner. For example, it could sponsor music lessons for a child in a financially strapped family or help with unexpected car repairs or medical travel. “There are so many ways that this can help one of our clients. We can’t say thank you enough,” said Futterer.

Grabko explained that Johnson’s series touched the individuals who own units at Chateau LeVeaux. “We are all so fortunate to be part of this beautiful community on the North Shore. We believe we have a shared responsibility to help those who may be struggling. We hope other associations may follow this lead and also give to this emergency fund, to the Salvation Army or to the local food shelf.”
