Homeowner energy efficiency workshop set for March 13

Keith Butcher, Energy Services representative with Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA) for the Grand Marais PUC, and Virginia Danfelt, Cook County Local Energy Project (CCLEP), will team up to offer a Homeowner Energy Efficiency Workshop at the Cook County Higher Education (CCHE) campus at 300 3rd St. in Grand Marais on March 13 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Butcher will cover many aspects of residential energy efficiency, drawing from his 14 years of experience in the field.

At SMMPA, Butcher works directly with six municipalities including Grand Marais to promote, administer, and evaluate a wide range of energy efficiency programs. He assists customers with all types of buildings from rental units and owner-occupied homes to schools and government buildings to small and large businesses. Programs address everything from light bulbs and appliances to large-scale motors and drives. Butcher promotes SMMPA’s rebate programs through marketing efforts, audits, engineering reviews and public speaking engagements.

Prior to working for SMMPA, Butcher was at the Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) in Minneapolis. In that role he was a spokesperson for CEE in various public and regulatory forums to promote energy efficiency efforts.

Danfelt will discuss CCLEP’s pilot Residential Energy Efficiency Program (REEP) and how homeowners can participate in the program. She will also cover some energy inefficiency issues typically found in older homes and how REEP can help address these problems.

Butcher and Danfelt encourage homeowners to bring photos or descriptions of problem areas in their homes for informal analysis and review. This workshop is supported in part by a grant from Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTS) to CCHE in collaboration with CCLEP for local energy education. A donation of $5 per household is appreciated.
