Coming out in a spread offense and passing on nearly every play, the Braham Bombers looked like they might be a handful for the tentative Cook County High School Vikings team that took the field last Friday night for the big Homecoming football game.

But the tentativeness lasted about three plays, and then the Vikings’ defense came charging hard after the Braham quarterback. The Vikings started laying some tenacious hits on the Braham receivers who, after a short while, weren’t catching the ball very well.

Meanwhile the Vikings’ offense didn’t take long to get untracked. Early in the first quarter running back Peter Warren got clear and dashed for about 40 yards before being hauled down at the Bombers’ one-yard line. On the next play quarterback Kale Boomer sneaked it in for a touchdown.

For the game Peter Warren carried the ball 14 times for 195 yards and averaged 13.9 per carry. Not far behind was Boomer who carried 17 times and gained 186 yards while averaging 10.9 yards per carry. Catching a rest this week on offense was Colin Everson who carried 5 times for 20 yards.

Jacob Schroeder made two great catches for 48 yards, while Mark Marxen caught one pass for 9 yards and Thomas Anderson made one catch for 18 yards to complete the Vikings’ offense.

There were plenty of holes for the Vikings’ backs to run through because the offensive line pushed the Braham defensive players around all night.

Head Coach Mitch Dorr said the line, “anchored by Justin Goldstein at center, with our two guards, Clay Johnson and Dakota Sorlie, and our two tackles Jonny Jacobsen and Devynn Deschampe, capped off by our tight end Jacob Schroeder, were named Offensive Players of the Week. In the past two games alone, Cook County has rushed for over 1,000 yards.”

On defense Colin Everson had 16 tackles, one sack, and five tackles for losses and was named Vikings’ Defensive Player of the Game. Everson also had the Vikings “Big Hit of the Week” when he sacked Braham’s quarterback early in the second quarter.

“That hit seemed to set the tone for the game,” said Dorr, adding, “Colin had a great allaround game.”

Jacob Schroeder tallied 11 tackles and Kale Boomer recorded 9. Peter Warren, Mark Marxen and Thomas Anderson had 6 tackles, while Joe Borud, Jonny Jacobsen and Brandon Curtis netted 4 tackles. Clay Johnson, Dakota Sorlie, Justin Goldstein, and Jake Carlson each had 3 tackles while Richie Furlong and Noah Warren each had one tackle.

Jacobsen also had two big sacks and Goldstein also had a huge sack.

The defense was so active that in the middle of the second quarter as his players were coming off the field Braham Head Coach Shawn Kuhuke exhorted his players to block, saying, “Our quarterback is running for his life out there on every play. Someone has to start blocking!”

The Vikings’ record is now 5-1. They played 1-6 Mesabi East on Wednesday, October 17 at Mesabi East to end the regular season. Playoffs will start next week with the Vikings taking on Cass Lake/Bena on Tuesday, October 23 startimg at 6 p.m.
