North House Folk School will host its second annual “Home School Day” Oct. 21, featuring four hands-on kidsonly courses.
Included are: . Sparks & Flames: Starting and Using Fire – 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will explore how humans have used one of our oldest tools – fire! Learn how to start a fire, keep a fire alive, and extinguish a fire. Students will compile their own flint-and-steel fire-starting kit and will walk away with an understanding of campfires, start to finish. . Birchbark Weaving Intro – 10 a.m. to noon. This class is an introduction to birchbark weaving and the beauty of a useful material. Students will learn about the history and ecology of birch trees and birchbark, and then dive into a series of projects such as beads, cubes, bracelets, rings and more. . Northwoods Masks: Make Your Own – 1 to 3 p.m. Investigate our local folklore with natural materials of the North Woods. Students will learn and discuss north woods stories and then use materials like birchbark, cattails, basswood, willow to make masks that can be used to perform favorite stories. . Time for Fika! Swedish Baking for Kids – 1 to 3 p.m. The most important time of the day in Sweden is snack time, so we’re going to prepare a couple of easy Swedish recipes: cinnamon rolls and blueberry juice! You’ll learn about Vikings and spices, how to make a cinnamon roll, and have a delicious snack with the other students.
This year, the Anderson Family Trust will pay the $10 tuition for any Cook County child; materials are $5 per child per course. Call (218) 387- 9762 to register. Space is limited and pre-registration is highly recommended.
