This is the first year the Marguerite Gilmore Scholarship has been awarded and a Cook County High School graduate,
Drew Holmen
of Grand Marais, is among the recipients. Holmen will receive a $10,000 scholarship, renewable for up to four years.
The scholarship was established according to the will of Marguerite Gilmore to provide scholarships for graduates of public and private high schools in Carlton, Cook, Lake, and southern St. Louis counties. Gilmore was born in Duluth in 1907 and died more than a century later after a life filled with art, literature and travel. Gilmore was a graduate of Denfeld High School and the University of Wisconsin, Superior and did graduate work at the University in Madison. She taught in Iowa before returning to Duluth where she taught art and English at Lincoln Junior High School until her retirement in 1970. She had high expectations of her students and was considered to be a very, very good teacher. In 2009, a scholarship trust fund was established as directed by her last will to provide scholarships for students planning a career in teaching, business or engineering.
The scholarship selection committee reviewed about 50 applications and chose six recipients based on academic record, standardized test scores, participation in extracurricular activities, community service and/or employment, recommendations, and seriousness of purpose.
Holmen is planning to attend the University of Wisconsin, Madison to study engineering. He is the son of Rita Plourde and Jim Holmen of Grand Marais.
