Holiday in Washington, D.C. is good news for taxpayers

For years, taxpayers have scurried to meet the April 15 deadline. This year, procrastinators get an extra few days because of a holiday in the nation’s capital. Taxes do not have to be filed this year until April 18. To help those last-minute folks, the local AARP tax aide volunteers will be available on that last tax filing day.

Tax volunteer Chuck Flickinger said Friday, April 15 is a Washington, D.C.-only holiday so all government offices are closed.

The good news, said Flickinger, is that Monday, April 18 is the last day to file taxes without penalty. The AARP tax aide volunteers will be at Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte, the Cook County Community Center in Grand Marais and the Grand Portage Community Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday, April 18 to do your tax returns for free.

“Better yet, come in before April 18,” said Flickinger. “On Wednesdays at Birch Grove and Grand Marais, and on Fridays at Grand Portage, to avoid the last-minute frenzy and long waiting times.”
