Holiday cheer at Birch Grove Community Center

December 2015 is here
and almost gone,

it came in so slow
and didn’t last long.

This month has been
joyously very productive,

Cook County hearts
have been happy to give.

The positive energy surrounding our Birch Grove Community Center is growing. There has been renewed interest and participation. My goal is to establish programs to bring a variety of people into this wonderful space. There are so many talented people in our townships and community. Anyone interested in giving lessons, setting up classes or providing a service, please call or e-mail with your ideas.

On the flipside I would like to know what the people would like to see. I have a lot of ideas, which can be difficult to schedule based on the Northland schedules. Please let me know your interests and I will do the best I can to accommodate your needs.

The West End has been very festive of late. The Seniors Lunch at Bluefin Grille was well-attended and a good time was had by all.

We had our Senior and Children’s Christmas Lunch on December 9, which had a very nice attendance. Which is cuter? Little kids with Christmas gift bags bigger than they are or our famous seniors trying to sing jingle bells and finish eating that sloppy joe?

At 10:30 a.m., (the party started at 11:30 a.m.), I had my first experience of really knowing how one of Santa’s elves feel.

The donations and participation is much appreciated, smiles and laughter and Rita’s cookies are the perfect reward.

The Card Ladies met on Sunday, December 13 for that one day a month (every second Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) to get the creative mojo flowing, chitter-chatter and potluck. This is another win-win situation, a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon instead of TV.

Local kids stopped by to enjoy lunch—and cookies!—at Birch Grove Senior and Children's Lunch on December 9.

Anyone interested in experimenting in the Scrap, Craft and Stamp world with Lavona Czplicki as your guide, bring yourself, your kids or your friends and their kids.

Every child I know loves to do crafts, come in and have some fun! The next scheduled date is January 10, 2016.

Senior Christmas Lunch at the Bluefin Grille in Tofte was a fantastic party on December 16. Despite the rain, wind, ice and snow, West End seniors ventured out to attend. I spent two hours making phone calls in fear of cancellations, making arrangements for rides if needed and ended up with a wonderful group of 21 in attendance from Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder. I am very proud of them all.

Bluefin Grille provided impeccable service with Nadya in the lead, everything was organized and the party room was decorated so festively. Nadya made a special trip in on her day off to assist with the event. This was much appreciated by me and I am sure by our server James who also did a flawless job. We were gifted with appetizers, beverages and cookies for dessert, all of this on top of our wonderful meals. Thank you, chef and kitchen staff.

We appreciate and thank Andy and Dennis Rysdahl for their generosity in making this a special community event.

W.E. Connect took on a special meaning on that day!

Upcoming events we are planning include a Winter Carnival, possibly Sunday afternoon January 24, 2016. This date will be published when confirmed.

There will be a Boot Hockey Tournament in February. We are seeking sponsors, if anyone is interested.

W.E. Fit Senior exercise will be obtaining an instructor provided by the Cook County YMCA hopefully in February 2016. Thank you Emily and Jen!

Any questions regarding activities or community room or equipment rentals please give Brenda a call at 663-7977, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Happy Holidays to all!

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte courtesy of Brenda Melin, program manager.
