When a historical society has been donated a weaving loom, what do they do with it? “Use it” was the answer for the Cook County Historical Society.
With the assistance of the Northwoods Fiber Guild the four harness sectional warping loom (c1930s) has been warped and is ready to go. Guild members Nancy Kemp, Mary MacDonald and Lennie Sobanja warped the loom for three rag rugs each 28 x 45 inches long.
The purpose of using the loom is two-fold: one is for demonstration purposes within the museum; the second is to allow individuals who do not have a loom to use one and perhaps learn to weave.
Erin Bonner was the first to try the loom, and she completed her first rug in less than five hours! For non-weavers, assistance is available. As a weaver completes his or her rug, the new weaver is asked to help the next individuals.
There is no charge for the use of the loom and, at present, all materials are free. There is one space available for the third rug; adult community members are encouraged to call and participate. No experience is necessary, but experienced weavers without a loom are also welcome to come and weave. Call the museum at (218) 387-2883 or history@boreal.org
