v The Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was about to host the largest eight-dog race they have ever offered on January 19, only to be challenged by the temperate weather conditions plaguing the upper Midwest. With deep regret, the race committee cancelled the race due to unseasonable weather conditions. Seventy-four dog teams had signed up for the January event. v County planning commissioners unanimously approved the Tait Lake Pines preliminary plat last Wednesday night. This action paves the way for the Lutsen Development Corporation’s cluster development of 31 homes on 319 acres adjacent to Tait Lake. The decision disappointed and angered a large number of residents with homes on the lake.

At the pool, new tile will be placed in the entryway and the drainage fixed in the women’s shower room. Fuel tanks will also be changed in the basement.

v Excerpts from The Grand Marais News, A Republican Newspaper Devoted to the Interests of Cook County

Father Vaughan, a noted British Divine, had this response when he was criticized for saying that there is cat and dog worship among silly women who treat their pets like children when the women should be focusing on real children instead of animals: You pampered votaries of pleasure say that there is no sin except that of being dull. Men and women have written to me saying that society today is no worse than it was in the time of Charles II or the Georges. I do not think it is so bad, but surely it argues poorly for the morals of society when it makes a boast of being associated with such ulcerous periods of history.
