Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. Reflecting on the martyrdom of Abraham Lincoln at the time of his death in April 1865, poet John Greenleaf Whittier wrote that if George Washington was the father of our country, then Lincoln was its savior. Lincoln’s assassination occurred on Good Friday; he died early the next day.
