This picture that appeared on the April 9, 1959 front page of the News-Herald, shows road crews carving a 110-foot cut into Mount Josephine near Grand Portage as one section of the new highway that was being extended to the Canadian border. Photographer Milford Humphrey noted that the workmen and their equipment are dwarfed by the high rocky cliff.
