This photo of one of the early “on the rocks” painting demonstrations given by Birney Quick was used to advertise and promote the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Grand Marais Art Colony in June 1972. The rugged shoreline has always been the favorite place to paint and give outdoor demonstrations, as evidenced by this large gathering. Interestingly, when the school opened in June 1947 it was known as the Grand Marais Outdoor School of Painting.
