The last pulpwood rafting season for Consolidated Papers on Lake Superior began June 24, 1972, marking the end of of a colorful 50-year era on the Great Lakes during which the company moved over 2 million cords of pulpwood on rafts from Minnesota to Ashland, Wisconsin. Six rafts were scheduled for the four-week season, all originating from the Grand Marais harbor with an expected haul of 21,000 cords.
