More than 1,000 persons attended the two-day Grand Portage Rendezvous Days in August 1986, and were treated to a host of voyageur games and activities. In addition to the hatchet-throwing contest, shown at left, there were canoe races, bannock baking over an open fire, fire starting with a flint, and numerous other demonstrations of skills used by fur trappers, traders and voyageurs in the late 18th century.
