Just as in recent years, Cook County’s Memorial Day ceremonies at the courthouse in May 1989 included a salute by the American Legion Honor Guard, but that year’s program also featured two award presentations to local World War I veterans. Ben Bockenhauer was a resident of Grand Marais for about four years prior to his World War I service—he was killed in action on Oct. 5, 1918 and is buried in the Meuse-Argonne Cemetery in France. His nephew, Russell Zerbach, accepted Ben’s award. The second honoree was Albert Bally, who received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action, also on Oct. 5, 1918. Bob Altrichter, veterans services officer, made the presentations.
