Cook County politics turned nasty in the fall of 1992 as vandals struck this West End political sign urging voters to support Gene Utecht for county commissioner. Investigators said the culprits poured a flammable liquid over the campaign billboard and torched it. The sign in the foreground states, “$1,000 reward for conviction of person that burnt the sign at milepost 87.” Utecht was defeated in the November election by Jim Hall by a vote of 312-232.
