Grand Marais, Tofte and Hovland telephone users were the recipients of a new Direct Distance Dialing (DDD) telephone system in June 1966, thanks to Northwestern Bell’s installation of new equipment. The modern technology enabled users to direct dial anywhere within the 218 area code, without preceding the seven-digit number with the area code.
