Two snowshoers couldn’t resist the thick ice and calm, sunny weather and decided to take a stroll on the Grand Marais harbor as seen in this March 1, 1979 photo. U.S. Coast Guard officials at Station North Superior said there was 8-9 inches of ice cover on Lake Superior around Grand Marais at the time, with minimal shifting. An estimated 90-95 percent of the big lake was ice-covered, the Coast Guard added, the most in 16 years.
