Historical Reflections

The former Grand Marais Elementary and High School building, a landmark in the community since its construction in 1908, was demolished in the spring of 1976 to make way for an apartment complex. The building was abandoned in 1970 following its condemnation. It served as the high school and elementary departments through 1952, when construction of the present high school was completed and the first high school classes were held there on Jan. 7, 1953. Down through the years a number of modifications and improvements were made to the original building; in 1924 a major addition was constructed which included a gymnasium.
