Historical Reflections

The Aug.11, 1977 News-Herald proclaimed that year’s Fisherman’s Picnic “One of the biggest in history,” and documented the event with plenty of pictures of that year’s parade, which included this photo of Grand Marais Garden Club members disguised as pretty posies. Other entrants in that year’s parade were the Route 61 Barbershop Quartet; a senior citizen float featuring Jim Hostrawser, Alma Olson, Ed Rice and Julie Jarman; the North Shore Sled Dog Association float which was pulled by 19 of Arleigh Jorgenson’s sled dogs; and a U.S. Forest Service float with Smokey Bear and several youngsters seated in a forest setting.
