Cook County News Herald

Historical Reflections

Community support for the local high school basketball team was evidenced by this handbill, which was printed and circulated by the News- Herald in January 1957. Not surprisingly, the “vicious Vikings from the north” won both of these contests, defeating Duluth East 50-45 and four days later, Polar League-leading Esko 55-54 in a packed gymnasium. The latter victory enabled the Vikings to retain the coveted “Red Herring Trophy,” which was won from top-ranked Esko the previous year. Players shown on the poster, clockwise from top left, are Carl Ridgway, Richard Humphrey, Carl Brandt, Herman Schliep, Steven Quaife and Jack Heiskari.
